What Shed Removal Costs
Everybody wants a number over the phone. That's fair. But two sheds that look the same from the alley can take wildly different amounts of work, and quoting one blind helps nobody.
So instead of a made-up price, here's what we're actually sizing up when we walk your backyard.
Size matters, but weight matters more
An 8x10 resin shed from a big box store weighs a few hundred pounds. A 12x16 wood shed with a shingled roof and a plywood floor deck can run a few thousand pounds once it's in pieces.
Disposal gets billed by weight at the scale. That's why roofing is such a big swing. Asphalt shingles are heavy, and a shed that's been re-roofed once without the old layer coming off is heavier still.
Metal sheds are the opposite. They're light, they come apart fast, and the steel has scrap value that can offset part of the disposal side.
What it's sitting on
This is the detail that moves a quote the most, and it's the one people forget to mention.
A shed on skids or a gravel pad is straightforward. We cut it down, load it out, rake the pad, done.
A shed anchored to a concrete slab is a different animal. Those anchor bolts have to come out or get cut flush, and then you have to decide whether the slab stays. Breaking up and hauling concrete is its own line item. It's heavy, and it goes to a different facility than the wood debris.
Post-set sheds are the sneaky ones. If the corners sit on 4x4s buried in concrete footings, those footings either come out or you're left with concrete plugs a foot down in your yard. Fine if gravel is going there. Not fine if you want grass.
Can we get a truck near it?
Access is the quiet cost driver. If we can back a trailer within twenty feet of the shed, loading goes quick.
If the shed sits in a fenced backyard behind a 36-inch gate, and the only path runs around the side of the house, every piece gets carried by hand. On some of the older North End and Bench lots, that's a long walk with a wheelbarrow.
Same story for sheds tucked behind mature landscaping or pinned against a neighbor's fence line. We can still do it. It just takes longer, and time is most of the bill.
Asbestos and older sheds
If the shed went up before about 1980, the siding is worth a second look. Some transite and cement-board panels from that era contain asbestos, and those can't be demoed the normal way or dumped with regular construction debris.
We won't guess on that one. If the siding looks like a candidate, testing comes first and abatement is a separate licensed job. It's a real cost. It's also a lot cheaper than the alternative.
What's still inside it
Sheds accumulate. Old paint cans, half a bag of fertilizer, a dead mower, four bike tires, and the trike your kids outgrew years ago.
Some of that is ordinary junk we can load right along with the shed. Some of it — paint, solvents, pesticides, fuel — is household hazardous waste and has to go to a designated drop-off rather than the landfill. Ada County runs a site for exactly this. Clear that stuff out ahead of time and your quote comes down.
A few things that add time
Wasp and hornet nests under the eaves are common here, especially by late summer. If there's an active nest, that gets dealt with before anyone swings a bar.
Power is another one. A surprising number of sheds have a buried extension cord or a small subpanel run out from the house. That gets killed at the breaker and disconnected properly, not yanked.
And if you're in an HOA neighborhood — plenty of Meridian, Eagle, and Star subdivisions are — check whether they want notice before demo work, or have rules about trailers parked on the street.

Price comes down to five things: how big it is, what it's made of, what it's anchored to, how far we carry it, and what it weighs at the scale.
